Chrome Extension: Reddit Under 100

Upvote IconHere’s a Chrome extension that will help you stop wasting time on threads where you have no hope of being seen. Use Reddit Under 100 to highlight threads with fewer than 100 comments.

Can you help me with Reddit marketing?

Sure! You can send me an email at reddit@clayburngriffin.com or use the contact form here.

How’s Reddit Under 100 work?

It’s simple. You install the extension by adding it to Chrome. Make sure to check “Allow in Incognito” if you want it to work in incognito mode. Then when you’re on Reddit, hit the ~ key to toggle highlighting on and off. (Yes, this means it might inadvertently toggle while you’re typing into Reddit if you hit ~, but is that really a big deal?)

When you hit ~, any threads on the page with fewer than 100 comments will be highlighted with a purple background. This lets you easily see which ones are worth your time.

Reddit Comments Highlighted

Simple.

Why 100?

By default, a page on Reddit shows 100 top-level comments. Any more require the user clicking “show more” to load. So, if you’re not already one of the 100 top comments, you’re probably not going to be seen.

Is my data safe?

Probably. I don’t think I have any data, but when you install the extension it will ask for access to “your data on reddit.com”. This is because Reddit is the site affected by the Chrome extension. I’m not a good enough developer to steal all your valuable karma, so as far as I know I don’t have any of your data. That’s a good thing too because I don’t want to know what horrible subreddits you participate in regularly.

Can I change it to 50 comments or something?

No. However, I might add this ability in a future update. I think this plugin could benefit from several options to let each user customize the experience. For now, though, it’s just a simple Under 100 highlighter.

Didn’t It Used to Use Q to Toggle the Highlighter?

Yes.  With Version 2.0, I moved to using ~ for this function.  The change was due to an updated design in Reddit using Q as a filter shortcut key.  However, for people who want to return to the original Q functionality, the extension now comes with the option of changing the toggle key to Q.  You can find this by going to the options screen for the Chrome extension.

Does it work on New Reddit?

Hopefully!  With Version 2.0, I added support for New Reddit, which youngins today probably just call Reddit.  New Reddit was a design update to Reddit some years ago and users still have the option of using it or Old Reddit if they prefer.  This extension was originally designed for Old Reddit, but with Version 2.0 it works with New Reddit as well, at least at the time of writing this.  Reddit may make design or template updates in the future that could stop it from working correctly.

The change to 2.0 for supporting New Reddit is also why the toggle key was changed from Q to ~.  On New Reddit, Q is a keyboard shortcut to open a filter toolbar.

Comments, Questions and Feedback

I’m on Twitter, which is a good way to reach me.

However, you can also contact me here. I’m not a very good developer, so help/advice would be appreciated. If you just want to complain about a bug, I can’t promise that I’ll do anything about it. Don’t hesitate to complain, though. All feedback is welcome!
